Promotion or Demotion? An Empirical Investigation of the Determinants of Top Mutual Fund Manager Change
نویسندگان
چکیده
We provide the ̄rst study of mutual fund management change that attempts to classify the reason for change. Our analysis of 307 manager changes separates promotions from demotions. In contrast to previous research that simply looks at changes, we ̄nd a richer set of variables that explain the probability of fund manager replacement. Indeed, our results suggest that a pooled regression that does not attempt to discern between promotion and demotion is misspeci ̄ed. ¤ The authors gratefully acknowledge valuable suggestions and comments from Anup Agrawal, Douglas Pearce and David Dickey. Are Mutual Funds Doomed to Underperform? Evidence from Managerial Turnover and Fund Flows
We empirically investigate the impact of fund flows and managerial turnover on the investment performance of active equity mutual funds. Fund flows have been suggested by Berk and Green (2004) as mechanism that prevents performance persistence. We propose managerial turnover as an alternative explanation. One the one hand, withdrawing money from loser funds and sacking bad fund managers are mea...
متن کاملEffect of Exchange Rate Change Shocks on Systemic Risk Index Among Mutual Funds
Financial stability is amongst the issues that have been increasingly considered over the past two decades. Today, money and capital markets play a substantial role in the development of societies, but at the same time, this development will be problematic if it is not accompanied by a program, control, and supervision. The main reason is that, due to the correlation between the real and financ...
متن کاملUsing Disjunctive orderings instead of Conflict Resolution in Partial order planning
Resolving conflicts in partial order planning by means of promotion and demotion has been an standard idea in least commitment planning for over twenty years. Recent analyses of partial order planning show that promotion/demotion refinements are optional from the point of view of completeness. Furthermore, promotion/demotion refinements run counter to the idea of least-commitment since the plan...

متن کاملAsymmetry of Reputation Loss and Recovery under Endogenous Relationships: Theory and Evidence∗
We formulate a dynamic investment model where investors can easily change firms (funds) and firms’ actions are subject to imperfect monitoring. We show that there is an asymmetry of fast customer loss and slow recovery, without learning or asymmetry in feasible actions at different states. The key factor is endogenous relationships. It is easy to lose customers but it is not easy to get them ba...
